Description: In this playlist, I will show you various videos of Haitian pianist and composer Ludovic Lamothe with artist who were influenced by him. Ludovic Lamothe (1882-1953) was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1882 to musically incline father. He learned about music from his father and grandfather. His compositions blend European classical traditions with Haitian folk elements mostly the meringue. He was given the nickname 'Black Chopin' after his favorite composer Chopin. Below are 6 artist who were either inspired or influenced by him.

1. Justin Elie

Justin Elie (1883-1931) was a Haitian composer and pianist who was influenced by Lamothe to blend European and Haitian traditions together. This composition he created is called 'Légende Créole (Creole Legend)'. He composed many other songs such as 'Le Chant du Barde Indien (Song of the Indian Bard)' and 'La Mort de l'Indien (The Death of the Indian)' and more. This piece reflects Elie's deep connection to Haitian folklore, blending storytelling traditions with classical composition techniques.


2. Célimène Daudet

Célimène Daudet is a French Haitian pianist who has been instrumental in reviving Lamothe's works. This is a play composed from Ludovic Lamothe work and played on piano by Daudet. She has performed compositions like "Danza No. 4" and "Fleurs d'Haiti," infusing them with contemporary nuances while honoring their traditional roots. Her interpretations highlight the emotive depth and cultural richness embedded in Lamothe's music. 


3. Martin Soderberg

Here is a rendition of Lamothe's composed piece of music 'La Dangereuse' played by Martin Soderberg.

4. Gérard Dupervil


Gérard Dupervil (1933-1994) was a Haitian pianist and composer who learnt music from a very young age. This song is called 'Choubouloute' by Gerard Dupervil. Dupervil has drawn inspiration from Lamothe's compositions. His interpretations of Lamothe's works showcase the seamless blend of European classical influences with Haitian folk elements, reflecting the cultural synthesis that Lamothe championed.

5. Bach to Kreyol Ensemble

This musical group consist of Claude Satuné and Julie Rozé who explores the fusion of Bach's compositions with Haitian rhythms. Their performance of "Danza No. 4" by Lamothe, featuring piano and Haitian drums, exemplifies the harmonious blend of classical and traditional Haitian music, a testament to Lamothe's enduring influence.


6. Boukman Eksperyans


Another musical group called 'Boukman Eksperyans' which consist of group members; Lolo, Jean, Manze, Natacha, Henry, Raymond, Eliphete, Gerald, Jean and Bwa Gris. They blend traditional rhythms with contemporary sounds, Boukman Eksperyans draws inspiration from Lamothe's integration of Haitian folk elements, especially the méringue, into their music.
